This summer, our team achieved an exciting milestone. The assembly of the very first Hydromag™ Drive Unit (HDU), a state-of-the-art “motor-coupling” system that dramatically simplifies the installation and use of large pumps and compressors.

Not only did the assembly process go smoother than expected but it was also without the slightest harm to personnel or equipment. The motivation and drive throughout the process has been impressive and the team is highly inspired to start the testing shortly.

The HDU can save up to 50% of capex cost or several hundred million kroner for the end-user, whether it is used for powering pumps in tail-end upstream production or for offshore aquaculture or subsea drinking water production.   

This state-of-the-art technology can make large rotating machinery seal-less (no chemical leaks to the environment), variable-speed, more autonomous and truly “plug-and-play”. The system can also increase reliability compared to conventional systems, as several fragile components are removed from the design. The HDU is designed and patented by FSubsea and includes the world`s most powerful magnetic coupling (<6000 rpm, <1.8 MW, <1000 bar test pressure), a powerful hydrodynamic Torque Converter supplied by Voith Turbo and a subsea motor supplied by Hayward Tyler.
